The most incredible thing about this inspiring true story is that it hasn’t been told before.

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians (Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe) that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in US history: launching John Glen into orbit. Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson crossed gender, race and professional lines with their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race. In succeeding, they firmly cemented themselves in US history as true American heroes.

With a rocking soundtrack by Pharrell Williams, this upbeat Oscar nominee relies on stellar performances from the entire ensemble, including Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons as colleagues resistant to equality, Kevin Costner as a fierce defender of rewarding talent and hard work in anyone and Mahershala Ali as a heartthrob love interest. D: Damien Chazelle, US, 2016, 2h 7m
