Dada Masilo's "Giselle"

US PREMIERE • HOP CO-COMMISSION South African choreographer’s searing reinterpretation of classical ballet about betrayal, heartbreak and revenge.

Friday, March 30, 2018
8:00pm – 9:30pm
Hopkins Center 114 Moore Theater
Intended Audience(s): Public
Categories: Performances

In 2016, South African choreographer Dada Masilo’s bold reinterpretation of Swan Lake (performed at the Hop) powerfully flipped ballet’s gender and racial dynamics. Now her Giselle—with Masilo dancing the lead—fearlessly takes on betrayal, heartbreak and revenge in a groundbreaking new version with music by South African composer Philip Miller and visual material by renowned artist William Kentridge. Drawing from classical ballet, African traditional dance and African percussion, Masilo delivers a brilliantly “woke” revision of a classic story.

Contains nudity, language and mature content.

Recommended for ages 14 and up.

Funded in part by the Wetzel Family Fund for the Arts.
