Gillian Welch first appeared on the folk scene two decades ago as a young singer-songwriter with a knack for conjuring the sound and imagery of a timeless, hardscrabble America. She and musical partner David Rawlings helped revive interest in southern Appalachian music and have inspired legions of fellow musicians with a sparse, haunting musical style “at once innovative and obliquely reminiscent of past rural forms” (The New Yorker). Their contributions span five acclaimed albums, alongside Grammy-winning contributions to the soundtrack of O Brother Where Art Thou? and the upcoming Ken Burns series on country music.
