Silent Voices:  How Gendered Meeting Dynamics Minimize the Role of Women in Foreign Policy, and Beyond.

April 27  |    1:45 PM EST   |   Registration Link: https://dartgo.org/silent_voices

The world was shocked when the then-head of The Tokyo Olympics organizing committee recently argued that the amount of time allocated to women at committee meetings should be limited because women talk too much. Join Dartmouth Professor Deborah Jordan Brooks as she facilitates a panel discussion with scholars and others about gender dynamics in foreign policy, and the implications of those patterns for the role of women in international relations. To better understand how women tend to get less voice, we will also explore gender-related dynamics in other types of meetings, both far away and very close to home – including within Dartmouth’s own classrooms.

PANELISTS:

Janice McCabe, Associate Professor of Sociology, Dartmouth

Jennifer JiWon Lee ’17, Indiana University Ph.D. student

(McCabe and Lee are authors of the 2021 article “Who Speaks and Who Listens”)

Stephen Brooks, Professor of Government, Dartmouth

Moderator: Deborah Jordan Brooks, Associate Professor of Government, Dartmouth
