Kristen Stewart gives a career performance in this bewitching, unconventional ghost story set in the fashion underworld of Paris.
Rarely does a ghost story debut at the Cannes Film Festival and this 2016 premiere garnered “boos” one night and a five-minute standing ovation the next. It also earned Olivier Assayas (The Clouds of Sils Maria) the Best Director prize and Kristen Stewart rave reviews as the titular character. A never-boring mix of spine-tingling horror story, dreary workplace drama and elliptical identity search, it follows a downtrodden Gal Friday of an A-List celebrity who is also mourning the recent death of her twin brother. An amateur medium, she is waiting for a sign from his spirit, and because Assayas has already indicated that ghosts are not only real, but potentially malevolent, that creates real suspense. There’s certainly enough here to haunt—but often in ways that have more to do with subtext and psychology. D: Olivier Assayas, France, 2016, 1h 45m
